Symphony No. 3 in C minor

1st Movement - Andante moderato

This is the first movement of my third symphony. The themes are derived form a rhythmic and harmonic motif, which I use and transform in many ways to create a complex piece of music. Starting with a motif is new to me but the development follows my usual way of composing by improvising at my keyboard. I record something, then ask "What comes next?" I don't do a sketch to plan the sections and parts; each theme or development follows from, or is informed by what came before.

This is the second movement of my third symphony. The themes are derived from the melodic motif of the first movement, transformed in to a slow movement beginning with an English horn solo. The movement continues with a string chorale, reminiscent of Barber's Adagio for Strings. The solo theme weaves in and out and the movements ends with the faint strains of a major chord.

2nd Movement - Tranquillo

In this the 3rd movement of my third symphony the main theme is still derived from the rhythmic motif of the first movement, transformed to a scherzo on cello. The movement continues developing the theme and transforming it in various ways by changing orchestration, modulating between major to minor keys and using an almost fugue-like counterpoint. It ends with a little surprise.

3rd Movement - Scherzo

4th Movement - Marcia moderato

This is the fourth movement of my third symphony. I have used the motifs and themes which echo the musical ideas of the other movements, especially the first. The themes vary from march-like to lyrical to an attempt at point and counterpoint. They modulate between keys, from C minor to Ab major, to Bb minor, and back and forth to finally end as the symphony began, with a flourish, in C minor.
